Chandigarh, Aug 10 – Inter-state Drug Secretariat set up to effectively tackle the drug menace in country’s northern region has started cracking down on drug-peddlers as it has helped field units in recovery of 119 kg and 202 gram of narcotics and over 35,500 banned tablets/capsules during the first 7 months of this year.
Giving this information here today, a Haryana Police spokesperson informed that secretariat helpline numbers had received 216 tip-offs against the persons involved in drug peddling and possession of drugs between January and July 2020. On this basis of these tip-offs shared by the general public, 22 cases were registered resulting in recovery of 118 kg 952 gram ganja, 208 gram 137 mg heroin, 42 gram smack and 35,785 tablets and capsules, which fell under the category of banned drugs.
In addition, police have also seized 23 kg 982 gram of drugs including heroin, ganja, smack, charas as well as 36,610 banned tablets and capsules on the basis of 299 tip-offs shared by general public about drug peddlers through helpline numbers between May and December, last year.
It is worthwhile to mention that country’s six northern states – Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh and Delhi and the Union Territory of Chandigarh have jointly set up centralized secretariat at Panchkula for sharing intelligence and information to effectively deal and eradicate the menace of drugs from the society.
The spokesperson urged the people to come forward and share information about sale, purchase and consumption of drugs and narcotic substances with the police at helpline number 1800-180-1314. In addition, information can also be given on mobile number 7087089947 and landline number 01733-253023. The identity of the informant will be kept confidential, he added.
