Chandigarh, August 14 – Former minister and senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia today exposed chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh’s claim that former SSP Tarn Taran Dhruv Dahiya had not received any specific complaint about hooch production by releasing two written complaints submitted to the SSP by local citizens on his personal WhatsApp number.

While releasing the two complaints which were sent on June 14 and 16 to the SSP with details about manufacturing and distribution of illicit liquor in Tarn Taran, Mr. Bikram Majithia said the chief minister was defending the indefensible by coming in support of a tainted police officer who was earlier accused of daylight robbery in Khanna and had overseen the death of more than hundred innocent persons in Tarn Taran. “The chief minister should spell out his compulsion for going out of the way to defend the controversial police officer”, he added.

Asserting that even while trying to defend Dahiya the chief minister had let the cat out of the bag, Mr Majithia said Capt Amarinder credited the police officer with recovering a huge amount of ‘lahan’ used to manufacture country-made liquor. “This inter-alia means that Dahiya did not do anything to recover the spirit which was used to manufacture the spurious liquor which led to hundred deaths in Tarn Taran”. He said the Tarn Taran police proceeded against illicit liquor maker Sukha Mehmoodpuria, who was a close associate of Khemkaran legislator Sukhpal Bhullar, only after the hooch tragedy. “If SSP Dahiya had done his duty before the tragedy and acted on the complaints of local citizens who even gave him names and license plate numbers of vehicles used by the liquor mafia this huge tragedy could have been averted”.

Mr. Majithia also reminded the chief minister about the role of Dahiya in the daylight robbery on a Christian priest in Khanna when serving as SSP there to help him refresh his evaluation of the SSP. He said Dahiya supervised a raid in Jalandhar even while he maintained it was conducted at Doraha and that Rs 9.66 crore in ‘hawala’ money had been recovered. “The truth was Rs 16.66 crore was seized illegally and the Khanna police team which employed a police cat and two handpicked officers specially requisitioned by Dahiya from the DGP misappropriated nearly Rs seven crore from this amount. The SIT formed by the police indicted Dahiya and nailed his lies and also accused him of keeping people in illegal custody while filing an affidavit in a Mohali court. All this also led to the shunting of Dahiya from Khanna by the Election Commission. As much as Rs 1.5 crore is still to be recovered in the case”.

Mr. Majithia also reminded DGP Dinkar Gupta that the hooch tragedy had occurred despite the latter’s announcement on February 15 this year that police personnel had been deputed for each of the 12,700 villages in the State. He said the DGP should explain why none of the 12,700 police personnel posted in any of the villages in the State informed him about the spread of spurious liquor. “Were they like the Guardians of Governance sleeping or they had been told not to come in the way of the liquor mafia?” he asked.

The Akali leader also asked the chief minister not to give eminence to controversial police officers and political appointees saying the Moga incident in which the national flag had been insulted was the direct result of an important position being handed out to the brother of the Congress mp from Khadoor Sahib. He said similarly police officers who were engaging in a clean-up exercise should not be transferred, saying Mandeep Sidhu had been transferred as SSP, Patiala because he was going after Congress MLAs Madan Lal Jalalpur and Hardyal Singh Kamboj.
