Can double-masking prevent Covid-19 infection? Here’s the answer!

CHANDIGARH

After the second wave of coronavirus, people have started taking prevention measures like double-masking, which means wearing one mask on top of another. To keep yourself safe and to keep people around you safe, one must wear double masks.

Medical experts believe that double masking enhances protection from the virus and reduces the prospects of transmitting and catching the virus. Various research studies have proved that the Covid-19 exposure can be reduced by 96.4 per cent if people wear the double masks.

The outer mask can apply gentle pressure to the edges of the inner mask and create a better seal. As the virus spreads through respiratory droplets, layers of a mask can help in protection from people around you sneezing or coughs.

One cloth mask on top of a surgical mask or two cloth masks are wearable. A face shield, along with a mask can be used at extremely-crowded places. Double masks for children are avoidable as they can counter breathing problems.

While wearing double masks, keep the following points in your mind:

  • Wash the cloth mask daily in hot water.
  • Your mask should properly cover the nose, mouth and the chin.
  • Say no to sharing masks between family members.
  • Sanitize your hands thoroughly, after removing any mask.
  • Be attentive! Whenever you dispose of your mask, throw in a covered bin.
  • Keep changing your mask at some intervals and wear a new one.

Here are some ‘DON’Ts’ while you put double masks:

  • Don’t linger your mask around the neck or chin.
  • Wet masks are not protective so, don’t wear them.
  • Don’t touch the mask often as it is a bad habit.
  • Do not remove the masks while speaking.
  • Especially when you cough or sneeze, do not remove the mask as your closed one can catch the bacteria.
