The mummies have been laid undisturbed for 2000 years. Therefore it is not surprising that they are in a poor state of preservation.

How did archeologists establish the connection with Cleopatra?

“Crucial evidence” suggests that the mummies were covered with gold leaves. For the people who are unaware about the Egyptian heritage, this luxury was provided to those belonging to the higher ranks of the society. As per archaeologists, these two individuals therefore could in most possibilty have interacted with Cleopatra.

An X-ray of the mummies has been done and results suggest that one is a male and the other is a female. Apart from this, 200 coins bearing Cleopatra’s name and her face have been discovered at the temple altar.

This opening of the tomb at Taposiris Magna was done in the presence of cameras for a new Channel 5 documentary, The Hunt for Cleopatra’s Tomb.

Head of the excavations at Taposiris Magna, Dr Kathleen Martínez is convinced that Cleopatra’s tomb will be discovered at the same spot.

Cleopatra was the last ruler of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt. Dr Kathleen Martínez opines that Cleopatra and her Roman lover Mark Antony might have been buried at the site 2,000 years ago.
