Pelvic inflammatory disease: Causes, symptoms, and preventive measures

Pelvic inflammatory disease is caused due to many reasons, but there are two common infections known as gonorrhoea or chlamydia. The main reason behind these infections is having unprotected sex. When any bacteria enter your reproductive part then the cervix get disturbed and it mostly occurs when women is on her periods, after giving birth, any miscarriage or abortion.

Here are some causes of infection in ovaries, or uterus:

  • When a woman younger than 25 years is sexually active
  • Having unprotected sex or without using protection
  • If woman is doing intercourse with more than one partner
  • Being in a sexual partner where man has many sexual partners.
  • Having a genetic problem of pelvic inflammatory disease

The symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease are mild and difficult to realize. Some women do not see any symptoms but internally infection is there. On the other hand some women counters below mentioned signs:

  • Pain in your lower abdomen (it could be slow or unbearable)
  • Vaginal discharge having odour
  • Uterine bleeding, either during intercourse or during menstrual cycle.
  • Pain while doing intercourse
  • Difficulty while urinating or frequent urination
  • Fever

 

Here are some measures which can be taken to avoid getting infected:

  • Have protection during intercourse- Every time use condoms while doing sex
  • Limit your sexual partner- Do not do sexual activity more than one or two as it can originate from the infection.
  • Get tested- Before having intercourse test yourself including your partner to find out if anyone has health problems.
  • Contraceptive measures- Many forms of contraception do not care for in contrast to the development of PID. Even if you take birth control pills, use a condom every time you have sex with a new partner to protect against Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs).

 

Is there any complication caused by the infection?

Definitely, when you will not treat your infection then it might go from mild to severe complications. It can cause major damage to the ovaries or fallopian tubes. Further infections in fallopian tubes can higher the risk of having an ectopic pregnancy (A pregnancy in which the fertilised egg implants outside the uterus which causes harm to the other organs), said medical experts.
