( Dr Daljit S Cheema asks CM to explain steps taken to end drug menace and restore rule of law)

Chandigarh, February 3 – The Shiromani Akali Dal ( SAD) today asked chief minister Bhagwant Mann to give his explanation on the severe indictment of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on the drugs and law and order front by Governor Banwarilal Purohit or submit his resignation and let Punjabis decide their future.

In a statement here, SAD senior leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said it was shocking that instead of replying to the disclosures made by the Governor during a field visit along with the state chief secretary and the DGP that drugs were being openly sold at grocery shops, the chief minister was trying to brush the issue under the carpet. “The Governor is being accused of interfering in state affairs”. He said though the SAD had always taken a principled stand on this issue and constantly alerted the chief minister to take up state issues effectively with the Centre, Mr Bhagwan mann has repeatedly failed the State. It is due to this that the AAP government has brought central interference on itself “, Dr Cheema added.

Citing numerous occasions when the AAP government was found wanting, Dr Cheema said this included the chief minister’s failure to challenge the changed status of BBMB and extension of BSF jurisdiction to 50 km from the international border. He said Mr Bhagwant Mann also did not speak out against the Haryana government‘s proposal to seek land in Chandigarh for a separate Vidhan Sabha and also supported Haryana‘s decision to create a separate Gurudwara management committee in the state.

Dr Cheema said this was not all. “Mr Bhagwant Mann also surrendered governance of Punjab to Delhi by signing a memorandum of understanding in this context. He also allowed consultants appointed by the AAP High command to sit at Cabinet meetings and even run day to day affairs of important institutions like Punjab State power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). He said in such a situation, it was the chief Minister‘s moral responsibility to answer the charges levelled against his government on both drugs and law and order. “Mr Mann should also spell out steps taken to fight the drug menace and control gangster and extortion culture”, Dr Cheema added.
