Here are some common causes of liver failure

CHANDIGARH

The liver fails when your organ is not capable of working smoothly or performing its duty. It can be a life-threatening emergency that needs immediate medical attention.

There are various diseases and conditions behind liver failure, including Hepatitis B and C, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, excessive alcohol consumption and hemochromatosis, told the medical experts.

Many times, chronic liver failure results from cirrhosis. Cirrhosis is the scarring of the liver from repeated or long-lasting injuries, such as drinking alcohol excessively over a long period or chronic hepatitis infection. When scar tissue replaces healthy liver tissue, the liver starts losing its ability to function properly.

Here are some of the causes of acute liver failure:

• Viral infections, such as Hepatitis B.

• The overuse of certain drugs or toxins, like acetaminophen, and the use of other medications such as antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-seizure medications, antifungals and herbs sometimes.

This disease takes years to develop and diagnose as the symptoms of liver failure look like symptoms of other health ailments, which make it difficult to treat at its early stages. When the liver starts getting weaker the symptoms get worse.

The common or early-stage symptoms are fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting blood, blood in the stool.

When suddenly the liver fails, it is called acute liver failure. People with acute liver failure may have the following symptoms:

• Bleeding from organs
• Jaundice
• Loss of appetite
• Change in mental status
• Difficulty in movements
• Starts feeling unwell
