The one thing that is mandatorily followed by many across the globe after every holiday is a strict diet. We indulge and over indulge in sweets and all kinds of food that it makes us feel super guilty later. With food servings becoming only bigger it is becoming harder to figure out the recommended portion. A scoop of ice cream or a serving of vegetables, we just don’t know anymore.

Easy hack for this exists in everyday things and your own hand. For a one- cup measure of foods like cereal, fruit chunks or vegetables, picture a baseball, tennis ball or your own clenched fist. For a half- cup, picture that baseball cut it half or front part of your fist. Other common portion sizes may be even smaller than you realize. For instance, one tablespoon is about the size of your thumb tip. One teaspoon is the size of the tip of your index finger. And a teaspoon of a liquid, like olive oil, is the surface of a postage stamp.

Here are some other tips to measure small amounts:

  • One-and-a-half ounces of cheese is about the size of a 9-volt battery.
  • A one-ounce piece of bread is the size of a 3″ by 5″ index card.
  • One ounce of nuts should fit snuggly within the cup of your hand.
  • Three ounces of meat should fit into the flat square of your palm — it’s about the size of a deck of cards or a mini pack of facial tissues.

If you get familiar with standard portion sized by measuring everything you eat you will not feel as guilty after the holidays. You can properly enjoy the food and also kept your health in check. Use cups, spoons and food scale. It is a great and efficient way to keep in touch with how much food you are consuming and you will also get an idea of how super- sized our portions have become.
