The students of 50 schools aged 10 to 17 got a taste of democracy as they participated in voting to elect the first-ever Bal Sansads (children’s parliament) in their schools. This voting exercise took place within the district. The results were announced by an election commission consisting of teachers and students from the schools.

Earlier, the students who filed nomination as candidates also campaigned for themselves during the elections. Now, the Bal Sansads in these schools will elect a prime minister, deputy prime minister, cabinet ministers, speaker, and other officials.

Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney mentioned that the school children enthusiastically participated in the electoral process. She emphasized that this initiative will give them an idea about elections, the functioning of a parliament, and will develop leadership skills amongst them. This will also help them take on leadership roles, discuss and debate critical issues, and encourage their civic sense from an early age, making them responsible and good citizens.

Sawhney encouraged teachers to involve all students in the Bal Sansad program, stressing its role in fostering responsible and capable citizens. She highlighted that this program will equip students with leadership, participation, democratic engagement, and decision-making abilities. She also applauded the teachers for their splendid work in this project.
