Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised an interactive session on the need and scope of the social work profession in Canada at Emerging Area Building, Panjab University. All students of masters of social work, research scholars attended the session. Interaction begins with the welcome of the guest speaker and special guests. Dr. Gaurav Gaur, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work, gave an introduction about guests.
Devi Sharma, Speaker of Council, Winnipeg City Councillor, Canada is the key speaker. In an interactive session with students, she provided information about the program and facilities in context to social services like affordable housing, recovery centers for addictions and settlement programs for international students. She accentuated on the residential schools, the gencide that was meted on the first nations people and intergenerational trauma, the virtue of self care, family life and mental health. That a person arrives prepared for a meeting. A prominent social activist Sushil K. Sharma was also present.
She encouraged students to stay connected with one’s culture and language. She concluded her powerful inspirational talk with a message of love and self care.
Davesh Moudgil, Former Mayor, Chandigarh and fellow Panjab University spoke about his journey in politics from Panjab University. He focussed on public participation for effective policy formation and policy implementation. He encouraged students to volunteer and join politics after masters to practice interventions with the community at ground.
Sudhir Kumar, Dean Research, Panjab University enlightens students with types of service and importance of local language to relate and connect with people. He emphasizes that learning new languages is good and important but one needs to stay connected with one’s own mother tongue.
This session came to closure with a vote of thanks given by Monica Munjial Singh, Professor, Centre for Social Work and she was lauded by the speaker for presenting women in prestigious faculty, where diversity and equal representation leads to change.
Students got the message to hold their elected leaders accountable.
