Mycosis: Read about fungal infection causes and preventive measures

According to the medical experts, a fungal infection is also known as mycosis in which some of them are capable of causing harm under specific conditions. Fungi reproduce by releasing spores that can be picked up by direct contact or even inhaled. The part which gets attacked by the fungi is skin, nails or skin, and affecting your organs.

Fungi infection or fungal infection is easily found in the contaminated air, polluted water and on the human body. Almost every kind of fungi is harmful for the body. It is said that, if one of the harmful fungi lands on your skin, it can cause a fungal infection. You may develop a rash or feel itchy as a symptom.

Some common types of a fungal infection include—Athlete’s foot, Jock itch, Ringworm, Yeast infection, and fungal infection of the nails.

However, every fungi infection has their own different symptoms and some fungal infections do not have any visible symptoms but can cause sickness in people with weakened immune systems and these are called opportunistic infections.

Anyone can catch a fungal rash in which the skin and nails are cited as the most common form of infection, affecting up to 20-25% of the world’s population at any time, said skin specialist.

Causes of fungal infections:

Some people have a higher risk for developing a skin rash due to fungal infection, including—having a weakened immune system, for example, if you are undergoing chemotherapy or any other organ ailment. Also, diabetic patient, pregnant women, overweight, or people who are eating antibiotics for a while, or apply cosmetics often or try a new skincare product. Infection can also be caused from new clothes or babies getting diaper rashes.

 

However, these 5 good hygiene tips can prevent you from fungal infection:

  • If you wear shoes daily then change your socks and wash your feet immediately after coming home. Don’t buy shoes made of plastic, which doesn’t breathe.
  • Cut your nails on time because the infection may be present there which will form in the next few days. If you have a fungal nail infection, use different nail clippers on healthy nails.
  • Apply cream or moisturizer on the feet, skin, and nails as a careful method.
  • Don’t walk barefoot, especially in public places that may be wet, such as gym showers, locker rooms, swimming showers, trial rooms etc.
  • Take a shower twice in the summer season and do a sponge bath in the winters after coming back home.
