(YAD leader Sarabjot Saabi condemns lathi charge unleashed on youth to suppress their democratic protest)
(Says if Balbir Sidhu not dismissed, youth will lead protest against CM also)
Chandigarh, June 7 – Youth Akali Dal (YAD) workers today held a ‘dharna’ in front of the compound leading to Health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu’s official residence here and even braved a ‘lathi’ charge while registering their protest against the minister for selling vaccines meant to be administered free of cost to Punjabis to private hospitals.
The protest, which was led by YAD Secretary General Sarabjot Singh Saabi, witnessed youth first trying to gain entry into the compound leading to the minister’s house as well as staging a ‘dharna’ in front of it. The youth also protested against the police attempt to suppress their protest with a ‘lathi’ charge as well as roughing up of YAD activists. Besides raising slogans against Balbir Sidhu they also raised slogans against the Punjab Police and the Chandigarh police for resorting to high handed tactics against them.
Telling youth to remain firm, YAD leader Sarabjot Saabi said the youth workers would continue to hold protests against Balbir Sidhu till he was not dismissed from the cabinet. He also demanded that a criminal case be registered against the health minister for playing with the lives of people by denying vaccines to them and indulging in corruption by selling off 80,000 vaccine doses to private hospitals at hefty margins. “There is a clear give and take between the minister and the private hospitals which should be probed so that action can be taken against all those guilty of this crime against humanity”. He said in case the government did not take any action the YAD would lead a protest against the chief minister also.
Other senior YAD leaders including Sarabjit Singh Jhinjer, Sukhjinder Singh Sonu Langah, Kanwalpreeet Singh Kaki and Jaspreet Rana also asked chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh to side with Punjabis who were suffering from the brunt of Covid instead of shielding a corrupt minister. “People are being denied vaccines in government dispensaries and hospitals and are being forced to go to private hospitals who are administering vaccines at rates between Rs 1500 to Rs 2,000 per dose to them. These vaccine doses were supposed to be administered free of cost to the people”, the leaders added.
The YAD leaders also demanded that besides the vaccine scam, Balbir Sidhu’s role in the recent Fateh kit scam unmasked by SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal as well as the PPE scam and the buprenorphine tablet scam should also be probed. “We cannot have such a corrupt minister at the helm of the health department during a time of health emergency”, they added.
