The Dharmashastras state that Pitri Paksha is an auspicious period for remembering our ancestors and offering them various things. We perform the ceremony of Sharads with utter dedication which is believed to result in fruitful outcomes. It can make our life peaceful and calm by aligning our stars. There are several myths related to this period which tell us what is right and what is wrong during this important time period. Learned people tell us that our ancestors hold the rank equivalent to God. They are invited to important family events including marriages. Petra Paksha is for remembering them and offer them offerings.
A major myth related to Pitra Paksha is that we should go shopping and buy expensive stuff for ourselves as it would make our ancestors happy. An Atrologer of Kashi Hindu University, Vinay Panday, says that giving away is the main aspect of this period. It can bring us prosperity and happiness if done in the right manner. He says the auspicious period would continue till 17th of September. Dr. Kameshwar Upadhyaya metions that Tulsidas considered Shiva as a Pitra. He goes on to say that there is no relation of buying and purchasing with this period. It is a mere myth which needs to be busted. Thus, consider twice this time before thinking of going shopping to impress your ancestors.
