Chandigarh, June 1: Even as the government and private hospitals in Haryana are already putting up a tough fight against the dangerous second wave of COVID-19 Pandemic, a fungal infection, Mucormycosis, commonly named as ‘Black Fungus’ has now emerged as a new challenge for the State Government.
From declaring ‘Black Fungus’ a notified disease and further constituting an expert committee to decide on the distribution of Injection Amphotericin-B, a drug required to treat the said disease, State Government is proactively focusing on ensuring timely treatment to the patients affected with this deadly infection along with making hands-on strategies to tackle COVID-19 Pandemic.
While alerted by this new virulent disease affecting COVID and Post-COVID patients, Sh. Manohar Lal led Haryana Government is making every possible effort to dampen the disease spread in its early stage only. For this, the number of beds reserved for the patients was increased from 20 to 75 in each medical college across the Haryana along with ensuring immediate patient referral to the nearest Medical College. Not only this, the timely treatment of Black Fungus is now being ensured at private hospitals along with every civil hospital at the district level. With this, the State Government has already initiated the process for arranging 7000 Amphotericin-B injections.
“As the cases of black fungus, yellow fungus and white fungus started reporting in the State, necessary steps were taken and completed expeditiously ensuring timely treatment to every patient. In Haryana, cases of Black Fungus have increased in the last few days. The Medical Colleges of the state have been directed to give treatment to every patient along with ensuring adequate availability of the required drug, says Chief Minister Sh. Manohar Lal.
Ensuring availability of essential medicines
The uninterrupted supply of drugs was also a major challenge in the fight against Mucormycosis, but with the constant efforts made by the dedicated team of Chief Minister, Sh. Manohar Lal, a stock of 7000 injections has been arranged in Haryana.
As per the available data, the health department has 59 injection district hospitals and 1110 injections in stock. At the same time, the supply of 2000 injections have started and further an order to buy 5000 injections has been placed ensuring that there will be no shortage of the required drug for treating the patients.
It is pertinent to mention that on May 28, as many as seven and 21 Amphotericin-B injections were supplied to government and government-aided Medical Colleges and Private Medical Colleges and hospitals respectively by the State Government. In this way, a total of 28 Amphotericin-B injections were provided by Haryana Government to various health care institutions across the State.
Due to continuous improvement in this supply, till May 31, 658 injections were supplied to government and aided medical colleges, while 500 injections were supplied to private medical colleges and hospitals ensuring timely treatment of every patient.
Boosting the supply of the required drug from 28 injections to 1158 injections in less than a fortnight certainly highlights the efficient management of the Haryana Government. The arrangements made by the government clearly indicate that along with further strengthening of the State’s health infrastructure, there would be a certain decrease in the number of patients in the coming days.
Number of recovered patients gradually increasing
Going by the official data, as of May 31, 2021, as many as 734 patients were undergoing treatment for black fungus in various hospitals across Haryana, while out of these 118 patients after completely recovering have returned home. Unfortunately, so far 75 patients have lost their lives.
Meanwhile, out of 927 cases reported so far in Haryana, highest number that is about 242 cases of Black Fungus was reported in Gurugram district only, followed by 214 cases in Rohtak and 211 in Hisar. While tackling most of the challenges ahead of time, Haryana Government’s proactive approach certainly played a pivotal role in combating the virus spread during the ongoing second wave. Now it is expected that vigilant steps were taken by the State Government for damping Black Fungus would also show positive results soon.
Government’s intervention for Amphotericin-B distribution to curb black-marketing

As per the official data, the Expert Committee has approved 975 Amphotericin-B for 515 patients. This dosage amount of drug is given per kilogram of body weight, for instance. 5mg/kg.
