Chandigarh, August 5– Haryana Police have issued an advisory requesting citizens especially the recently retired government employees to refrain from sharing any personal information with a stranger or a caller as by doing so they can become victim of cyber fraud on the pretext of post retirement benefits.
Cautioning people to be aware of such cyber fraudsters, ADGP Law & Order, Haryana, Mr. Navdeep Singh Virk said that a new trend of cyber crime has come to the fore. Taking advantage of lockdown restrictions these fraudsters have started targeting the retired government officers with an aim to dupe them on the pretext of post retirement pension benefits. Such cyber fraudsters believe that the retired government personnel may not be tech savvy and can be easily cheated.
“At present, increased numbers of cyber crimes are being reported and we are constantly trying to help people by advising them to refrain from falling into the trap of cyber fraudsters,” he added.
Explaining the modus operandi, the ADGP informed that such cyber fraudsters first gather some basic personal information about the retired personnel and then call the victim posing to be from the Department of Government Treasury. Subsequently, they try to win the confidence of the victim in the telephonic conversation by mentioning personal information correctly like date of birth, date of superannuation, and last posting held by the officer. As soon as the fraudster wins over the confidence of the victim, he tries to cheat him by seeking personal information like bank account number, password and details of transaction for updating data pertaining to their pension.
Suggesting to be cautious from such criminals, Mr Virk has advised citizens to avoid sharing confidential information like bank account number, password, OTP and transaction details with any unknown person or caller. Giving it to somebody else could result in loss of money. He further added that if a person has been cheated then he or she should file a complaint at the nearest Police Station or at www.cybercrime.gov.in immediately.
Elaborating on the efforts made by the Haryana Government on the growing menace of cyber crime, Mr. Virk said that six new cyber crime police stations will be coming up soon in Haryana, one each at Faridabad, Rohtak, Karnal, Ambala, Hisar, and Rewari. These will be in addition to the two existing Cyber Crime Police Stations presently at Panchkula and Gurugram, and it will augment the strength of Haryana police and enable them to fight cyber crime better.
