The arrival of white gold (Cotton) in the markets of Fazilka district is giving good indications regarding the Cotton crop. This year, much more crop arrived in mandi as compaired to last year on same day, which proves that yield will be more against the last year.
In fact, this has become possible because the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Maan provided Irrigation water to the farmers through canals in the month of April, well in advance as per the demand of farmers and agriculture experts, due to which early sowing was done in this south western district of Punjab. With early vegetative growth crop was able to resist the attack of white fly and other insects and when attack of Pink Boll worm happened good numbers of bolls were already developed in lower and middle parts of Plant, which yield good cotton for farmers.
It is to be mentioned that last year 91500 hectares of Cotton was sown in the district while during the current year this area was 92800 hectares. Although the increase in the area of Cotton was minor, the figures of the crop arrived so far in the markets are a relief for the farmers.
Last year in the market of Fazilka, there was a total of 38000 quintals of Cotton, while this year, 15200 quintals of Cotton have been received so far.
Similarly, in Abohar, which is the main market of Cotton, last year till date there was an arrival of 38300 quintal, while this year there has been an arrival of 65160 quintal till date.
While it is still the early days of the cotton marketing season.
On the other hand, Cotton is still generally sold above the minimum support price set by the government. The farmers who came to sell Cotton in the market also believe that the crop gave good yield, only because of the water provided by the government for irrigation on time and if the government did not arrange water in advance, there was no hope of Cotton crop this year.
Similarly, the farmers also say that due to the early sowing of the crop, now the Cotton crop will be ready early and as the fields will be emptied on time, they will now sow the wheat on time. Whereas during the previous years, due to late harvesting of cotton their wheat sowing also happens late.
