The Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Shri Ashwini Kumar Choubey in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today informed that as per information received from NIC (CONFONET), as of June, 2021, 25 Presidents and 68 Members are already appointed in State Commissions and 367 Presidents and 695 Members are already appointed in District Commissions across the Country.
As per the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, the State Governments are to establish District Consumer Commission in each district of the State and appoint members and President of the State/District Consumer Commissions. Central Government provides financial assistance to State Governments for setting up and strengthening infrastructure of Consumer Commission buildings.
To increase transparency and simplification of the adjudication process in the Consumer Commissions, CP Act, 2019 has provisions related to enhancing pecuniary jurisdiction of the Consumer Commissions, filing of complaint from the Consumer Commission having jurisdiction over the place of work/residence of the consumer irrespective of the place of transaction, e-filing and e-payment, videoconferencing for hearing, deemed admissibility of complaints if admissibility is not decided within 21 days of filing; court monitored mediation to facilitate early disposal of cases.
