Chandigarh, September 4 – Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam is committed towards security of its employees, especially the techincal staff working on power lines.  For this, international standard’s safety kits have been provided to technical staff of these Nigams. As a result of these safety kits, in last two years, there is a huge decline in untoward incidents caused due to power shocks.

It is noteworthy that Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN) and Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (DHBVN) carry out the  work of electricity distribution throughout Haryana.

A spokesman of the Nigam said that  Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam’s  (UHBVN) technical staff has been provided with 9000 high quality gloves, 18450 voltage sensors, 525 ladders, 14750 breakdown kits and 18450 helmets. These equipments protect technical staff from sudden electric shock while working on the lines.

He said that the kit also includes helmets with voltage sensors which can sense electricity current in an 11 KV line from a distance of six feet. He said that the ladders made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) have also been provided to technical staff for mounting electric poles, which protect them from power shocks even when the wires are close with ladders. Besides this, high quality safety belts have also been provided to the employees so that they can carry out maintenance work in a safe manner, he added.

He said that because of these safety kits, not a single accident caused due to power lines has been reported in 39 sub-divisions of UHBVN’s in last one year.

The Spokesman informed that to check electricity related mishaps, on the first day of every month, technical staff are made aware about the safety precautions to be taken by them while performing their duties.  A booklet has also been created for technical staff to avoid power accidents, he said.

He said that in this booklet, guidelines have been given to avoid electric related accidents. It has been clearly mentioned that the permit to work on the power lines will be given only to the employee authorized by the SDO (Operation) of Nigam.

It is mentioned in the booklet that the information related to the name of the employees authorized by SDO (Operation), his registered Whatsapp mobile number, work area etc. should be made available in all the sub-stations and to the employees along with the office order, he said.

The spokesman further informed that it is mandatory for the authorized employee to visit the sub-station to obtain a permit for routine maintenance tasks. During emergency, the authorized employee will send a photo of the completed permit form through WhatsApp to the Sub-Station In-charge and he will also call the Sub-Station In-charge. This booklet also states that the SDO (Operation) will identify and make a list of illegal buildings where the risk of power accidents due to illegal construction is high.

The spokesman said that a booklet is being prepared by the Nigam to also make farmers aware as how to avoid electricity related accidents. The booklet will be made available soon.
