Following the death of Nymiah Tenzin, the discussion about Ladakh and SFF’s operation is reaching its height.
WHAT IS THE SFF?
It is a special force that came into existence after 1962 Indo- China War. It is believed that USA played an equally important role in the formation of the force. It initially comprised of soldiers who had migrated from Tibet or the Gurkhas and was named as Establishment 22 under Major General Sujan Singh Uban.
USA’S CONTRIBUTION TO THE FORCE:
It is believed that during the third Indo-Pak War, 1971, India succeeded in liberating people of East Pakistan with the help of SFF and there is no trace of USA being involved in the matter.
IS SFF A PART OF THE ARMY?
SFF is not actually a part of the Indian Army but work under its control and contribute to the army in general.
TRAINING OF SFF:
Their training to become a soldier starts in Chakrata, Dehradun. From there the soldiers proceed on to Sahranpur where they are trained to use parachutes which are important for their work. In the end, Ladakh helps them with their real training with high altitudes and low temperatures. Women are also a part of the force.
CONTRIBUTION OF SFF TO THIRD INDO-PAK WAR:
In 1971, India carried out Operation Eagle in which SFF played a major role as it helped the army by destroying the communication network of Pakistan and preventing the escape of dangerous elements to Burma. Had it not been for SFF, the mission might have failed.
OTHER MAJOR OPERATIONS OF SFF:
SFF has been a part of several other operations along with the Indian Army. The major ones include Operation Blue Star of Amritsar and the Kargil Conflict.
It is unclear why is SFF revealing everything to the world today. A major possibility is that it is warning China against all the harms it is doing to India.
