Chandigarh, December 16 2021
Under the aegis of the Electoral Awareness Programme of Chandigarh Administration, the NSS units and the Electoral Literacy Club of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh held a 3-day long awareness programme that comprised of various activities seeking to strengthen the spirit of democracy. On day one, Electoral Pledge was administered virtually to over 100 students and faculty members of the college. All the participants committed themselves to uphold the ideals of democracy.

On the second day, an online Quiz on the topic ‘Elections and Electoral Process in India’ was organised that tested the participants’ knowledge of the process of elections in our country. Around 161 students took part in the quiz. The programme culminated with an online Declamation Contest on the topic ‘Importance of Local Bodies Election (Municipal Corporation – 2021) in Chandigarh’. Students took part enthusiastically in the contest. Over 35 entries were received for the contest wherein the participants reiterated that it is crucial to vote for the right candidates to ensure the development of the city in terms of infrastructure, safety and facilities. The contest created the much needed awareness amongst the first time voters to vote for and support the right candidates in the Municipal Corporation Elections scheduled in December, 2021.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava expressed appreciation for this initiative of NSS and Electoral Literacy Club to promote awareness among the youth regarding the electoral process and its importance. She added that since fair and free elections are the backbone of any democracy, the event will go a long way in nurturing the spirit of democracy among the youth.
