Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji composed 116 words and 15 ragas and his teachings have been included in the Adi Granth. As the 400th Festival of Lights is being celebrated with great religious fervour, lets have a look at his teachings.
The path of divinity
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji showed his disciples the path of divinity by teaching them to overcome greed, desire, ego and pain. He had said that renounce ego, and always run away from lust, anger and evil company. Happiness and sorrow, respect and disrespect should be treated equally. One should renounce both adulation and condemnation and should seek salvation.
Art of self-control
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji preached self-confidence and self-control. When one has mastered the art of self-control one can become truly spiritual. He said that one who does not grieve in sorrow and does not rejoice in pleasure, who is free from fear and attachment, and for whom gold and dust are alike, who has renounced both adulation and condemnation and is free from greed, when all the Gurus bless a disciple with his grace, only then that disciple attains this blessed spiritual state and blends with the Lord in the form of water.
Making peace with every situation in life
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji led his followers towards the path of peace. He taught the world to be content with one’s life, because everything in the world is ‘done by Nanak’. He spread the idea of attaining ‘Jeevan Mukti’ by making peace with every life situation.
Protect those who need protection
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji was a merciful saviour of the weak, and he preached the same. He taught his disciples to protect those who are in need of protection, even if it is at the cost of one’s own life.
Be satisfied with your life
Every person wants to live a satisfied life and it is possible only when he is happy and satisfied with his life. Therefore according to the teachings of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji, one should be aware of his needs and be satisfied with them. He said that if one is not satisfied with one’s own life, there will be despair and when life is full of hatred and despair, peace of mind will never be attained.
Lord is Omnipresent
Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji had spread the ultimate teaching which Sikhism always follows and believes that there is only ‘One God’. To lay emphasis on the ideology of ‘One God’, even Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji preached that there is ‘Ik Onkar’ (One God) as God is the creator, preserver and destroyer. Thus, the Sikh thought begins with an omnipotent God and then universalises Him and He finally descends to the cosmic reality of the all-pervasive ‘Onkar’.
Let us follow the teachings of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur ji and attend the grand programme to be held in Panipat on his 400th Prakashotsav.
