MCM celebrates Earth Day 2022

In a befitting celebration of World Earth Day, the Horticulture and Landscaping Committee, NSS units and Environment Science Department of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh organised various relevant activities. The Horticulture and Landscaping Committee, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India, organised ‘Best Lawn at College Campus’ Competition under Swacchta Action Plan 2022-23. The NSS units held an awareness cum interactive session at Government Model High School of the adopted village Badheri. The resource person for the session was Dr. Shafila, Assistant Professor, Department of Environment Science, Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh. The event was graced by the presence of Mrs. Sanjogita, Headmistress and Ms. Gurpreet, Teacher, Government Model High School, Sector 41-D, Village Badheri, Chandigarh. The session was attended by more than 80 school children. Dr. Shafila sensitised the students about the need to conserve the environment and protect our planet, and also pointed out the harmful effects of soil and air pollution. She urged the students to adopt sustainable practices like turning off lights when not in use, usage of bicycles for transportation, reuse of waste water from RO, etc. At the end of the session, the NSS volunteers displayed hand made posters to educate the audience about ways to conserve and protect environment. The Department of Environment Science, under the aegis of Institution Innovation Council of the college organised an online workshop on ‘Floral Waste Recycling Innovatively’. Ms. Poonam Sehrawat, a renowned environmentalist, social worker, influencer, and motivational speaker, was the resource person for this enlightening workshop. Ms. Sehrawat demonstrated step wise procedure of making agarbattis, dhoop, swastik, Ganesh ji from floral waste. She shared her expertise in recycling flower waste in an innovative way with over 74 participants.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded the efforts to help students internalise the value of respect for Mother Earth through such contextual activities that drive home the message of the need to save our planet from the implications of the indiscriminate damage being done by humans. She added that the celebration of Earth Day in its true sense should entail a thoughtful contemplation on mending our ways and reassessing our contribution in saving environment and natural resources.
