Tarikh- the History Association of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh organised an online lecture on the topic ‘The Memory and Symbolism in Mughal Tombs’. Art and Architecture Historian Dr. Mehreen Chida- Razvi, Research Associate in SOAS, University of London, Deputy Curator, Nasser D Khalili Collection of Islamic Art and Assistant Editor, International Journal of Islamic Architecture was the resource person for this enlightening lecture. Dr. Chida- Razvi threw light on how Medieval Indian rulers used funerary spaces as a medium of displaying power and sovereignty. She especially highlighted the architectural traditions of Mughal tombs and explained how the tombs built by the Mughals were symbolic of imperial power, dynastic memory and lineage, thereby dwarfing those built by the rulers of the Delhi Sultanate before them. The lecture was attended by over 130 students and faculty members. It was followed by an interactive discussion which saw active participation from both students and faculty.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava expressed appreciation for this initiative of the college’s History Association to educate students about the relationship between architecture and memory. She said that an understanding of the symbolism embedded in our architectural tradition is important for better understanding of our history.
