CHANDIGARH 28 MAY 2022
To mark the celebration of International Menstrual Hygiene Day, Swachhta Committee (Arts) of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh organised an awareness session wherein demonstration on Incinerator for Sanitary Waste was held for students. The college has installed incinerators in various washrooms in the campus as well as hostel, and this demonstration aimed to sensitise students about disposal of used sanitary napkins in a scientific and hygienic way. During the session, the importance of menstrual hygiene was highlighted and the students were encouraged to use incinerators for disposing off sanitary napkins instead of throwing them away in garbage. The students were educated about the hazards posed by burning of sanitary napkins and accumulated menstrual waste, which include degradation of environment through release of harmful toxins and thriving of pathogens on waste.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava expressed appreciation for this initiative of Swachhta Committee to promote the use of incinerators, thereby promoting eco-friendly disposal of sanitary napkins as these work without generating smoke and also prevent choking of drains. She underscored the need to make females aware about the significance of menstrual hygiene and the problems caused by the improper disposal of sanitary pads.
