(Appeals for establishment of two sub-centers of the Institute in Jalandhar and Amritsar to broad base the fight against cancer)
Chandigarh, August 24 – Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal today expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for dedicating the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Mohali to the nation even as he called for establishment of sub-centers of the Institute in the Majha and Doaba belts to provide affordable quality treatment against cancer to the people of Punjab.
In a statement here, the SAD president said “it gives me immense pleasure that the 300 bedded Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Mohali which came into being after former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal visited the Tata Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in 2012, has been finally opened to the people. “It was the first such Institute to be approved by the TMC Board outside Mumbai with work starting on it in 2013. The SAD led government allotted fifty acres of land for the Institute which is part of the Medicity project initiated by it to provide world class treatment to the people of Punjab”.
Asserting that people would now get quality cancer treatment at subsidized costs, Mr Sukhbir Badal also appealed to the Prime Minister to facilitate establishment of two hundred bedded sub-centres of the Institute in Jalandhar and Amritsar to broad base cancer treatment in the State. He also requested the Prime Minister to expedite construction of the PGI satellite centre at Ferozepur.
Mr Badal said the erstwhile SAD government had given top priority to the health sector by investing Rs 10,000 crore in this sector during its tenure. “The satellite centre of the PGIMER, Chandigarh in Sangrur and an Advanced Cancer Institute affiliated to the Baba Farid Health Sciences University at Bathinda was also established during the tenure of the erstwhile SAD government. “So too were PIMS, Jalandhar and the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences. Creation of two more sub-centers for treatment of cancer at Jalandhar and Amritsar will further help in fighting this scourge”, he added. EOM
