MCM holds an awareness session and competitions on Drug Abuse

The Victory against Drug Abuse (VADA) Club of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, under the aegis of Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, held an awareness session on ‘Drug Abuse among Youth’. The session was conducted by Dr. Debasish Basu, Professor and Head, Department of Psychiatry, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Beginning this enlightening session by defining the terms drug and abuse, Dr. Basu shed light on the prevalence of drug abuse. He further discussed in detail the sociological, psychological and biological reasons for the youth’s vulnerability to drug abuse. To prevent the menace of drug abuse, Dr. Basu asserted that the youth should make life a priority, focus on mind and body, give back to the society and inculcate in themselves a sense of spirituality. The session ended with an interactive session wherein the queries of the participants were addressed by the expert. In another event, the VADA Club conducted Elocution, Essay Writing and Painting Competitions on the themes- ‘Is Substance Use Addiction: A Disease or a Choice?’, ‘Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan and Road Map Ahead for its Success’ and ‘Impact of Substance Use on Individuals’, respectively. The event aimed to strengthen the actions and cooperation in achieving the goal of a sustainable world free from substance abuse. The competitions received enthusiastic response from students who participated in large numbers.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava highlighted the importance of concerted efforts in curbing the problem of drug abuse and building a healthier society. She asserted that each individual has to play a positive role in the fight against drugs by raising awareness in their community regarding this menace and educating people about ways to prevent drug abuse.
