one-day workshop on ‘Mental Health Issues’ for Prison staff of Model Jail Chandigarh

The Institute of Correctional Administration (ICA), Chandigarh in collaboration with the Department of Prisons and Correctional Administration, Union Territory, Chandigarh organized a one-day workshop on ‘Mental Health Issues’ for Prison staff of Model Jail Chandigarh on 16 January 2024 at Model Jail, Chandigarh.

This workshop created awareness about various mental health issues affecting the prison population. Dr.Upneet Lalli, Head Coordinator (Training & Research), ICA mentioned the impact of imprisonment on the mental health of the inmates. Dr.Aarzoo Gupta, Assistant Professor, GMCH, Chandigarh discussed common mental health illnesses and psycho-social interventions in Prisons. Ms.Navjeet Klair, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary, District Legal Services Authority, U.T. Chandigarh spoke on provisions under ‘The Mental Health Act 2017.’

Ms. Klairclarified the treatment and procedure to be followed in the case of mentally ill prisoners inside prisons. Ms.Navjeet Klairand Dr.Palika Arora, PCS, Additional IG Prisons, Model Jail distributed the certificates to the participants. Sh.PraveenKumar, DSP Model Jail thanked Dr.Upneet Lalli for organising this workshop for Chandigarh Model Jail staff.  The Institute will be organising a series of workshops for the training of model jail prison staff.
