The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) during its relentless campaign against corruption in the state on Tuesday nabbed an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Saroop Singh, posted at police station Jalalabad city, Fazilka district for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000.

Disclosing this here today an official spokesperson of the state VB said the above mentioned accused has been arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by Surjit Singh, a resident of Jammu Basti, Jalalabad.

He further informed that the complainant has approached the VB and alleged that the above said police personnel has demanded Rs 20,000 as a bribe in lieu of submitting police chargesheet in the court regarding a police case registered against him but the deal has been struck at Rs 17,000. The complainant has further informed that the said accused has already taken Rs 10,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 in three installments and further demanding the remaining bribe money of 4,000. The complainant has recorded the audio conversation with the police personnel while demanding the bribe amount which was handed over to the VB as an evidence.

The spokesperson further added that the VB Ferozepur range after a preliminary investigation of this complaint laid a trap and the said police official was arrested while accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. The VB team has recovered bribe money from his possession on the spot. In this regard a case under prevention of corruption act has been registered against the accused at VB police station Ferozepur range and further investigation into the case was under progress.
