The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today accused chief minister Bhagwant Mann of acting as a tout to scuttle the peaceful agitation of Punjab farmers by issuing directions to stop the machinery of Punjab farmers from reaching the Punjab- Haryana border.

In a statement here, former minister and senior SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia said “the chief minister first failed to act against the Haryana Police which attacked farmers with tear gas, pellet guns and rubber bullets in Punjab territory. Now he has issued directions in his capacity as home minister to stop the machinery of farmers from reaching the Punjab – Haryana border and deployed the police force to implement this direction by putting up road closures”.

Asserting that this had throughly exposed the chief minister who had tried to mislead farmers by pretending to advocate their cause, Mr Bikram Majithia said the truth was that Mr Bhagwant Mann had failed to support Punjab farmers in their hour of need. “The chief minister should be ashamed of himself for failing farmers who voted him to power to safeguard their rights”.

The SAD leader disclosed that the chief minister had also misled the farmers while trying to play the advocate during meetings with central government ministers. “Mr Bhagwant Mann refused to take a stand in favour of farmers at the meetings due to which the talks broke down”.

Mr Majithia also highlighted how the  chief minister had failed to register any case against Haryana Police personnel who had attacked farmers in Punjab territory and had not given any compensation to those martyred or injured in the Kisan struggle.

He also reiterated that the SAD had always supported the cause of the farmers and would continue to do so. “We stand for institution of a legal guarantee on MSP as well as a complete loan waiver and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report ensuring 50 per cent profit on cost of weighted cost of production of food grains”.
