Panjab University, Chandigarh, has successfully completed an accessibility audit conducted by a University Grants Commission (UGC) committee on January 16-17, 2025, as per the Supreme Court guidelines and the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.
The committee, chaired by Professor Pramod Mehra from IGNOU, included Prof. Lokesh Gupta and Mr. Vinod Kumar Yadav, Deputy Secretary, UGC. Their comprehensive evaluation focused on physical infrastructure, academic opportunities, scholarships, assistive technologies, workplace accommodations, and overall accessibility for persons with disabilities (PwDs).
During their visit, the team interacted with key stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and university authorities. They reviewed ramps, elevators, accessible washrooms, scribe facilities, assistive technology, and other support mechanisms. Detailed discussions with Vice-Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, Registrar Prof. Y.P. Verma, and Dr. Ramesh Kataria, Nodal Officer for PwDs, PU, underscored the university’s commitment to inclusivity.
The committee’s report expressed satisfaction with Panjab University’s efforts to create an enabling environment for PwDs and provided valuable recommendations for further enhancements. The findings and recommendations of the committee are expected to provide valuable guidance for enhancing the infrastructure and support services at Panjab University and its affiliated colleges, ensuring equitable opportunities for all.
