SAD initiates membership drive, starts handing over copies for enlistment of members

Chandigarh, 20 January 2025 

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today initiated the party’s membership drive from the ‘karmbhoomi’ of former chief minister Parkash Singh Badal with senior leader Sukhbir Singh Badal receiving the first membership slip after depositing Rs ten in cash at Badal village.

SAD Working President Balwinder Singh Bhundar inaugurated the membership drive later in the day from the party headquarters here by handing over membership copies to senior leader Maheshinder Singh Grewal and Suchha Singh Langah. Senior party leaders as well as workers also thronged the SAD headquarters here to collect the membership copies. The copies are also being dispatched across the State.

There was widespread response to the membership drive across the State with a huge number of party workers collecting at Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur and Faridkot besides other places. Thousands of workers filled up the forms after depositing Rs ten for the membership of the party.

Speaking to newspersons in Badal village, Mr Sukhbir Badal said “the response on the very first day is amazing. We expect more than 40,000 persons to enlist as members from Lambi constituency alone. I am confident that the party will be able to enlist around 50 lakh members as part of the one month drive”, he asserted.

Meanwhile Mr Balwinder Singh Bhundar disclosed that the said party’s parliamentary board had also met today to discuss the entire process and it was decided that the chief election officer – Gulzar Singh Ranike would monitor the entire process in consultation with Observers who had already been appointed. “All efforts are being undertaken to ensure the entire drive is conducted in a completely transparent manner”.

Giving further details, senior leader Dr Daljit Singh Cheema said it had been decided that the drive would continue till February 20 and that elections to the post of President of the party would be held on March 1. Explaining the entire process, Dr Cheema said all members who enrolled 100 members would be eligible to become Circles delegates and that they in turn would elect the Circle Jathedars. “All those who enroll 2500 delegates will become district delegates and it would be the latter’s responsibility to elect the Zila Jathedars”. He also announced that each constituency would nominate four delegates who would form the general house and would elect the president of the party.
