Feroz Khan kick starts 32nd National Road Safety Month in Kargil

KARGIL, JANUARY 18, 2021 : Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor (CEC), LAHDC, Kargil, Feroz Ahmad Khan kick started the month-long activities in connection with the 32nd Road Safety Month in Kargil at Council Secretariat here today.

Executive Councilor for Works Mubarak Shah Nagvi, Executive Councillor for Tourism Er Phunsog Tashi, Executive Councillor for Health Muhammad Ali Chandan, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Kargil Tsering Motup, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Kargil Tsering Motup, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Kargil Iftikhar Talib Choudhary, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO), Kargil Khadim Hussain, district officers besides the representatives of various transport unions and media persons were present on the occasion.

Feroz Khan flagged off a vehicle rally from the Council Secretariat Kargil wherein the CEC along with the ECs, ADC, ASP and district officers rode in a public transport bus which was aimed to symbolize the good will gesture to promote public transport.

The rally culminated at Tourist Facilitation Center (TFC), Kargil where the dignitaries and officers spoke about the importance of promoting public transport to minimize traffic congestion and pollution.

 Speaking on the occasion, CEC Feroz Khan said that the National Road Safety Month aims to create awareness about road safety and reduce road accidents in the country.

The CEC while congratulating the Transport Department Kargil for having come up with the idea of the members of the Executive Council of LAHDC, Kargil and senior district officers riding in public transport said that the step will prove helpful in spreading message in the public about the significance of public transport to reduce the adverse impacts of pollution and traffic congestion due to the increasing number of private vehicles.

CEC Khan expressed optimism that the month-long activities will go a long way in generating awareness and education among the masses at large towards reducing mortality on the roads by following the traffic rules and regulations in letter and spirit. He suggested the ARTO Kargil to ensure the participation of BDC Chairpersons and PRI members in the month-long awareness activities so as to sensitize the masses at the grassroots level.

ADC Kargil Tsering Motup in his address stated that a proper traffic system is the sign of an ideal city or town and all stakeholders should make collective efforts to make sure that traffic rules and regulations are obeyed well to make roads safer.

ASP Kargil Iftikhar Talib Choudhary who also spoke on the occasion highlighted the importance of public transport and how it can prove helpful in smooth passage of essential services on roads besides also lessening the impact of pollution from vehicles on the ecological balance and sustainability which are of utmost importance for human life.

Earlier, ARTO Kargil Khadim Hussain presented details of the various activities to be organized in the district during the month-long campaign culminating on 17th February, 2021.

The ARTO informed that the activities will include the concept of Raahgiri involving the distribution of face shields and masks, sanitizers and disinfectant materials for passengers vehicles by Transport Department and Police, panel discussions on Doctors as Road Safety Champions, free transportation to all public up to 25 kilometers by all transport associations of Kargil to spread the message of road safety and traffic etiquettes and behaviors with commuters, distribution of road safety stickers by NHIDCL, PPT on New Motor Vehicle Act, 2019  for concerned departments and transport unions by ARTO and Traffic Police, seminars on road safety for women in public, panel discussion on road safety measures by ARTO, R&B, Traffic Police and BRO, awareness camp by National Insurance Corporation for various stakeholders and other related activities.

Meanwhile, the CEC along with other dignitaries felicitated the officers of Ladakh Police, Traffic Police besides the representative of various transport unions and media persons by presenting them mementoes for their noteworthy services during the COVID-19 pandemic situation, elections and other activities.
