Secretary Ravinder takes stock of the functioning of Trout Fish Farm Damsna

KARGIL MARCH 08, 2021: Secretary Sports, PDD, Animal and Sheep Husbandry, Cooperatives and Fisheries UT Ladakh, Ravinder Kumar during his 3 day extensive tour of Kargil district took stock of the functioning of the Trout Fish Farm Damsna here today.

Assistant Director Fisheries Kargil Murtaza Ali besides other concerned officers and officials were present on the occasion.

During his visit to the farm, the Secretary reviewed the progress of various ongoing works of the Fisheries Department, Kargil and also inquired from the concerned officers about the status of developmental activities being implemented by the department under various schemes. He also took stock of ongoing artificial breeding operations of Rainbow Trout at the farm.

While expressing satisfaction over the functioning of the department, the Secretary said that all out efforts are being made by the UT Administration Ladakh to transform rural poverty to prosperity through fisheries and aquaculture development by way of judicious and gainful utilization of water resources. He said that against diverse resources, limited portion has been exploited and brought under systematic and judicious management, while leaving majority of the resources unexplored which are still in their pristine condition.

Secretary Ravinder said that with the rapid expansion of Fisheries Sector, the department is planning for construction of a Fish Farmers’ Training Centre at Fish Farm Damsna for capacity building of entrepreneurs/fish farmers in aquaculture, hatchery management, seed rearing and integrated farming etc.

The Secretary also said that in the interest of enhancing production and productivity, the Department of Fisheries is planning to establish a small trout feed mill at Fish Farm Khachan with a capacity of 2 to 5 tonne per hour which would revolutionize the aquaculture in the region by producing quality and cost effective fish feed, as lack of quality feed is always a constraint for aquaculture development in the region.

The Secretary further stated that Fishery based eco-tourism is emerging as one of the area for the educated unemployed youth and farmers to develop entrepreneurship/self-employment, and also results in ancillary activities which generate employment among the unemployed youth. He said that keeping this in view, fish farms shall be converted into multi-dimensional ventures with beautification of the landscape, addition of recreational infrastructures of aquariums and angling facilities besides routine annual production of fish.

As an experimental measure, Fish Farm Damsna shall be developed by establishing the required infrastructure, the Secretary added.
