Must eat food for Diabetics

Even though doctors often ask patients to give up on sugary and starchy carbohydrates in their daily meals when diagnosed with diabetes or high blood sugar levels, the diabetics still have the option to eat delicious and healthy food.

Eating meals in the right proportion and monitoring the total amount of carbohydrates in it is a healthy practice for the diabetic patients but this article will help them to make right choices while buying groceries for their meals.

  1. Green leafy vegetables

Well, eating the green leafy vegetables not only benefits the diabetics but also helps people in preventing other diseases. The green vegetables, including spinach, kale, cabbage, broccoli, beans and others, are powerhouse of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. Leafy greens are also rich in calcium, potassium and have a limited amount of added sugars, which helps the diabetics to balance their diet.

Whole grains like—brown rice, whole-grain bread, whole-grain pasta, buckwheat, quinoa, millet, bulgur and rye—must be added in the daily meals to control the blood sugar levels. These grains are a rich source of fiber and help in slower absorption of nutrients in the body.

Beans are the best plant-based protein source, which will limit your carbohydrate intake but will make you feel full for quite a sometime. Kidney beans, pinto beans, black beans, navy beans and adzuki beans are a few varieties that can be added in salads or main courses. These beans also contain important nutrients, including iron, potassium, and magnesium.

You must have heard that eating walnuts are good for your memory and functioning of your brain but interestingly, walnuts also help in reducing blood sugar levels and reduce chances of getting heart diseases. People can soak a handful of walnuts overnight and can then have it for breakfast. The antioxidants rich Chia seeds can also help in controlling diabetes, so add them in your diet.

 

  1. Sweet potatoes

Even if the food had the word ‘sweet’ in it, the food can be a healthy option for the diabetics. Sweet potatoes are rich in fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C and potassium.
