Jalandhar, June 11 2021
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab on Friday burnt an effigy to protest against the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government at Ambedkar Chowk in Jalandhar, over post-matric scholarship scam of SC/ST students of Punjab. The protest was led by AAP leaders including, Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, Saravjit Kaur Manuke, MLAs Baljinder Kaur, Amarjit Singh Sandoa, Jagtar Singh Jagga Hissowal, senior leaders Manwinder Singh Giaspura, Lal Chand Kataruchakk, Rajwinder Kaur among other leaders. The leaders raised slogans against the Congress government and demanded strict action against the ministers and officials involved in the scam. On the occasion, the AAP launched a helpline number – 7827273487 for the Dalit students, where the students can report their problems.
Addressing the protesters at Ambedkar Chowk, the AAP leaders said that the Education Minister of the Congress government was pretending to strive for development in the education system, while the real picture of Punjab’s education system was that more than two lakh SC/ST students in Punjab cannot give exams. They said that the Punjab government should issue a white paper on the issue of post-matric scholarship scam so that the truth of the scam could be exposed. The AAP leaders said that although the Punjab government had announced to release the final installment of Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Caste Students for the academic year 2020-21, the future of students of the remaining three sessions was still at stake due to the game of central and state government. “This is because, the Joint Association of Colleges (JAC) has made it clear that it will not issue student roll numbers due to arrears for the remaining years,” they added.
The leaders said that Captain Amarinder Singh had ruined the lives of lakhs of students by embezzling in the SC students’ scholarships as many colleges in the state had refused to give roll numbers to the students, while the colleges had also kept important certificates and degrees of the students in their possession. “As a result, the students have been deprived of applying for jobs. Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh is making big announcements, but now the people of Punjab have lost faith in him,” they added. The AAP leaders demanded that the Captain government should immediately release the post-matric scholarships of the SC/ST students of Punjab and register a criminal case against Sadhu Singh Dharamsot and the officials involved in the scam.
