Captain government should provide assistance of Rs 5,000 on the lines of Delhi: Baljinder Kaur/Dalbir Singh Tong

Chandigarh, May 6 , 2021

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Baljinder Kaur and Transport Wing’s state president Dalbir Singh Tong on Thursday said that the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government of Punjab had not provided any relief to the transport traders, drivers and mule drivers during the Covid-19 pandemic; but instead had made them unemployed by imposing restrictions. The leaders demanded immediate financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to the people involved in transport on the lines of Delhi’s Arvind Kejriwal government.

They said that Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh had stopped the transport business by imposing restrictions without any special plan. “The transport business has been hit hard by the closure. As a result, it has become difficult for the people involved in the transport business to earn a living,” said the leaders. MLA Baljinder Kaur said that by not allowing more than two passengers in vehicles during the Covid pandemic was neither commercially viable nor practical. She said that the government had imposed restrictions, but why no provision was made to provide financial relief to traders.

Dalbir Singh Tong said that Covid could not be dealt with by imposing restrictions on the transport business. “On the one hand, the Punjab government has ordered the opening of banks, government offices and liquor shops where people gather in large numbers and on the other hand, the government has ordered a particular number of passengers in transport vehicles,” he said. He said that in such a situation, cars and tempo drivers were suffering a lot. “How will these businesses compensate for the losses caused by government impositions? Does the government have a plan for compensation?” he questioned. Criticising the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Congress government, the leaders said that the Captain government needs to learn from the Delhi government. They said that the Punjab government should take immediate action to provide financial assistance to cars, autos, tempos, rickshaw pullers, mule carts and truck drivers for their livelihood.
