Alcohol intake - Reason why you may be PMSing

Premenstrual syndrome is a common problem with women today. One of the major reasons behind PMS is alcohol consumption.

PMS leads to mood swings, tender breasts, food cravings, fatigue, irritability, anxiety and depression. The extent of PMS varies from woman to woman. According to researchers, it is more severe for women who drink alcohol.

A research was conducted from database of eight different countries to know more about this phenomenon. This study involved more than 47,000 participants. The study concluded that women who consume moderate level of alcohol heightened the risk on PMS by 45 percent whereas the risk was heightened by 79 percent for heavy drinkers.

As per the researchers, the proportion of women who drink alcohol is around 30 percent, globally.

The researchers speculated that eliminating heavy drinking in women could prevent severe PMS of 1 in every 12 cases in Europe.

Alcohol might boost PMS risk by altering levels of the sex steroid hormones and interfere with the mood hormones produced by the brain.
