96,259 tonnes per day of Municipal Solid Waste is being processed in a scientific manner
All 4,372 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)/Cities of the country are practising scientific disposal of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) as per the Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules, 2016. Out of 1,40,980 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) of municipal waste being generated in the country, 68% i.e., 96,259 TPD, is being processed in a scientific manner. Further, the details of waste collection and segregation in urban areas of the country are as under :

Sewage management system is not covered under Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban (SBM-U). However, under Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (being implemented in 500 cities with population more than 1 lakh), 79 lakh sewer connections have been provided to the households and Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) of total capacity 1,634 million litres per day (MLD) have been created.
This information was given by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Shri Kaushal Kishore, in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha today.
