CAN WE GROW CROPS ON MARS AND MOON?

The technology is advancing with time. We have achieved great lot of things in field of science and space. A few years ago scientists discovered a new possibility about living on the moon and also Mars. Since then there have been a research going on about water and how one could live there. The plan of settling there has also been going on. Recently, a new study was conducted to find out if crops can be grown on the moon and the red planet. It was found that NASA confirmed the possibility of growing crops there.

WHAT HAVE RESEARCHERS CONCLUDED:

A study was conducted by the group of researchers in Wageningen University in Netherlands which proved that it not only possible to grow plants on Mars and also the Moon, but it is also possible to take out seeds from them for future crops. A variety of plants seeds were tried including tomato, quinoa, spinach, chives, and peas. The tomatoes turned red when they were grown on the moon which made the researchers happy as their efforts were successful. The soil seemed like normal soil and the taste did not differ much either.

THE JIST OF THE STUDY:

The researchers said that if people are to inhabit the Moon and the Mars in the near future, they need to sustain themselves as it is very difficult to ship supplies from earth. That is the very reason why this research was done in the first place so people are able to grow their own food. Out of the ten plants nine of them grew properly. Samples of edible portions of the plants were collected for further testing. It was also seen that seeds of these plants can be used further for germination.
