Chandigarh, April 18, 2021
Lashing out at Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh-led state government for not making prior arrangements regarding procurement of wheat and gunny bags (bardana), the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Kotkapura and Kisan Wing president, Kultar Singh Sandhwan demanded immediate action from the Punjab government to address the plight of the farmers. In this regard, Sandhwan also wrote a letter to the Cabinet Minister of the Punjab government Bharat Bhushan Ashu seeking attention to the plight of the farmers. He stated that due to the lax arrangements of the Captain Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government, the farmers were facing many difficulties and due to the lack of gunny bags, the procurement and disbursement of the crop by the farmers of Punjab had been facing severe difficulties for a long time.
“Apart from this, due to inclement weather and rains across Punjab, the crop of farmers is spoiled in the mandis which is very unfortunate and worrisome,” said Sandhwan. He said that the farmers in Punjab had been struggling and suffering in the mandis for days over their crops. According to the statistics, about 10 lakh tonnes of wheat had been soaked due to rains in the state due to inclement weather and the farmers were facing more difficulties than before to sell it,” he added.
Sandhwan said that the farmers of Punjab were already struggling against the three black farm laws and were suffering from severe mental stress and the attitude adopted by the government towards the farmers at such a time was reprehensible. “The Captain government is responsible for the difficulties faced by the farmers regarding the procurement of wheat by not making prior arrangements,” he said. Sandhwan demanded to take action in this regard and to give strict instructions to the officials concerned so that the farmers could avoid struggling in the mandis and their wheat crop could be procured in an orderly manner.
The AAP leader further demanded that due to poor management of the Captain government, rain soaked wheat should be procured immediately in the mandis and their moisture content should be relaxed as it was soaked due to incompetence of the Punjab government. “If the government still does not address the plight of the farmers and does not address the shortage of bags and expedite the procurement of wheat; the Aam Aadmi Party will gherao the house of minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu in this regard,” said Sandhwan.
He said that the Punjab government was directly responsible for the poor management of wheat procurement and drastic steps should be taken in this regard. Sandhwan said that the AAP leaders were going to the mandis to scrutinise the arrangements of the government and in case of dissatisfaction of the farmers, they would take strict action and would not shy away from besieging the government.
