In order to develop scientific temperament of school students and give them an opportunity to explore the world of science, the Mukh Mantri Vigyan Yatra Pushpa Gujral Science City, Kapurthala was launched today by Minister for Science and Technology Mr Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer here at Government Senior Secondary School, Sandhu Patti today.
Addressing the gathering, the Minister said that total 1.25 lac students from government schools will be shown the colorful and knowledgeable world of science at Pushpa Gujral Science City Kapurthala. “Government aims at increasing the scientific bent of mind of students so that we can have more innovations and better life. This journey of science will also ensure that the children are motivated to opt for science subjects after their matriculation,” he said.
Minister added that students enrolled for science subjects at the was nearby 25 percent at the national average. He said that the same figure for Punjab is even lesser at around 14 percent. This CM Vigyan Yatra is a step towards bringing children closer to science subject thereby increasing their enrollment for science courses. “This will have a windmill effect that shall end up in increasing number of employment opportunities for youngsters by making them more employable and creating entrepreneurs,” he added.
Earlier, speaking at the event, Secretary, Science and Technology, Government of Punjab Mr Rahul Tewari called upon the students to dwell upon wonders of science in their daily life and take motivation from it. He asked students to shun plastic usage altogether and make a commitment towards betterment of environment.
He flagged off four buses carrying 300 students of Government School for Boys Barnala, Government School for Girls Barnala, Government High School Jumla Malkan and Government Senior Secondary School Sandhu Patti to the science city.
Deputy Commissioner Barnala Dr Harish Nayar, ADC Barnala Mr Paramvir Singh, SDM Barnala Mr Gopal Singh, Dr Neelima Jerath Director General Science City, Dr Rajesh Grover Director Science City, OSD to Minsiter Mr Hasanpreet Bharadwaj, Ashni Kumar PRO Science City, DEO (S) Sarabjit Singh Toor, GM PRTC Mr Jatinder Pal Singh Grewal were also present among prominent dignitaries.

Punjab Khed Mela Aug 29 to be watershed in world of sports in state, Minister Meet Hayer:
Punjab government is holding Punjab Khed Mela on August 29 commemorating birth anniversary of hockey legend Dhyaan Chand. Minister Mr Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer said that this will be a watershed event in the world of sports in state. Everyone from 14 years to 50 years of age can participate in this event wherein events will be held from block to state level.
“We shall soon be opening online registration of players for this event. This online registration will help us create a digital repository and database of all the players. The data collected will then be put to use for developing sports infrastructure tailor made for particular region,” he said. To inspire the young generation, mass participation of veteran players also is being ensured in this event.
