Department of Fisheries, UT Ladakh, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries Engineering, a constituent department of College of Fisheries, Shirgaon, Ratnagiri, of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agriculture Sciences and Technology (SKUAST), Kashmir, organised a programme on technology transfer in trout fish breeding. The programme has been funded by the Scheme for Young Scientists & Technologists under the Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi.

Secretary, Animal/Sheep Husbandry and Fisheries, Ravinder Kumar was the Chief Guest for the occasion, and Director, Animal/Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries Department, Dr Mohd Raza was the Guest of Honour.
The event was initiated by the Assistant Director Fisheries, UT Ladakh, Mohammad Amin, who gave a warm welcome to all the distinguished guests and farmers. He further informed about the main objective behind developing a sustainable technological intervention, i.e. to find a low-cost hatchery module based on minimum water usage for the existing rainbow trout hatchery practices which is based on the flow-through process.
During the event, Director, Animal/Sheep Husbandry & Fisheries Department, Dr Mohd Raza emphasised how the technology will be a huge advantage for the farmers as it will prove to be a good source of income. He added that this was a proud moment for the Department of Fisheries and apprised the farmers to take full advantage of the technology.
Head, Division of Fishery Engineering, FoFy, SKUAST, Kashmir, Dr Gohar Bilal Wani commended Dr Mohammad Iqbal Mir for making this experiment a success. He also added that in the future, the Fisheries Department of Ladakh will be able to produce a huge amount of trout fish eggs.
Principal Investigator, Dr Mohammad Iqbal Mir gave a brief about his journey into making this experiment a success and also shared the amount of struggle he went through during the research period. Later, he gave a live demonstration on the transfer of rainbow trout fish seed-producing technology based on the Recirculatory Aquaculture System. The technology aims to produce high-quality rainbow trout fish seeds for the farmers and to make the Department of fisheries independent in producing seeds rather than importing them.
Secretary, Ravinder Kumar said that the Department of Fisheries has been working on in-house breeding for a long time, and for that purpose, the success of technology transfer in trout fish breeding will prove to be a milestone. He commended the team of SKUAST, Kashmir for their support and appreciated the Principal Investigator, Dr Mohammad Iqal Mir, Department of Fisheries, and all the farmers for making this experiment a success. He further assured that the department will provide full support to all the concerned farmers.
