Chief Agriculture Officer Rupnagar Dr. Avtar Singh said that under the directions of Additional Chief Secretary Punjab and Director Agriculture Sukhdev Singh Sidhu, 15800 hectares of paddy would be sown in Rupnagar district through direct sowing method.
Disclosing this here today, the Chief Agriculture Officer said that these targets have been distributed among all the blocks of the district and from now on the authorities have been asked to make the farmers aware about this and to clear the rumours of direct sowing method.
He said that there is severe shortage of water in Rupnagar district due to which planting of paddy with this method would save electricity and water and at the same time would reduce the cost of machinery. He said that according to experts, this method saves 15 to 20 percent of water. He also said that this method would be more successful in flood prone areas as the flood water would go underground instead of standing in the fields and the damage to the crop would be less.
Dr. Avtar Singh further said that the Agriculture Department has organized 35 awareness camps in different villages of all the blocks from March 16 to April 30 during the month of March and April to achieve this goal. Through these camps the farmers have been encouraged to adopt this method.
Apart from this the direct sowing drills would also be made available to the farmers on subsidy by the agriculture department and further efforts would be made as per the convenience and need of the farmers. With all the above schemes this goal will be easily achieved. He said that the slogan of successful farmer prosperous Punjab would be properly implemented.
