Eye Check-up & Breast Cancer Awareness organised at MCM

The NSS Units of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Sector 36-A, in collaboration with Advanced Eye Centre, PGIMER, Chandigarh organized a “Free Eye Check-Up Camp” at Government Dispensary Badheri, Sector 41-D, Chandigarh to focus on the importance of good eye health and detect any eye related problems so that they can be diagnosed and treated early. A team of doctors led by Dr Parul Chawla Gupta, Associate Professor, Advanced Eye Center PGIMER, conducted eye checkups among the residents of Badheri. The camp received an overwhelming response as more than 100 people got eye tests done. Cataracts, eye dryness, and myopia were one of the most reported eye ailments. The patients were advised of eye care with the use of eye drops along with a suggested visit to the eye center for further follow-up. The NSS units and Medical Committee of the College, in collaboration with Fortis Cancer Institute, Mohali organized ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Month’ by focusing on early detection and busting myths regarding diagnosis and treatment. One of the resource persons of the event, Dr. Shweta Tahlan, Consultant Gynaec Oncologist and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon, discussed the self-breast examination techniques under the acronym ‘DIY – Detect It Yourself’.
The students also interacted with a popular RJ from MYFM, Shelza Bhatti. She not only quizzed students on what they had learned from the event but also gave away gifts to the enthusiastic participants. The event concluded with the rhythmic beats of a fun-filled Zumba-Bhangra and Aerobics session. Principal of the college, Dr. Nisha Bhargava stressed the need for early detection and diagnosis of diseases to ensure that treatment starts at early stages. She added that prevention is better than cure and students must focus on healthy habits to avoid lifestyle-related illnesses. She thanked the NSS units, the Medical Committee of the college and the PGIMER team for initiating discussions around such crucial issues.
