The Patient approached Dr Amit Garg, Bariatric and Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon, Fortis Hospital Mohali, in July, 2019. Post examination, Dr Garg suggested that Bariatric Surgery or Metabolic Surgery was an ideal treatment option for the Patient. Bariatric Surgery is done laparoscopically and assists in weight loss by making changes to an individual’s digestive system. It is the only scientifically proven method to treat morbid obesity and patients with associated Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, infertility etc. and allows patients to resume normal work within a few days of the surgery.
Dr Garg conducted bariatric surgery on the Patient in 2019. Post-surgery, the Patient’s weight reduced from 106 Kgs to 63 Kgs and his health problems such as Type 2 diabetes, cholesterol level and fatty liver were resolved. “Today, the Patient is able to walk 3-4 kms without fatigue and able to do all routine activities with ease,” added Dr Garg.
Another Patient, 45-year-old Daljit Kaur from Karnal, weighed 120 Kgs and exhibited symptoms such as hypertension, knee pain, back pain and restricted mobility. She approached Dr Garg at Fortis Mohali in March, 2020, and subsequently underwent Bariatric Surgery. Post-surgery, the Patient’s health problems were resolved as she had lost 53 Kgs and weighs 67 Kg today.
Discussing the benefits of Bariatric Surgery, Dr Garg, said, “Bariatric Surgery is a boon for treating obesity which has become the second preventable cause of death after smoking. For many obese individuals, Bariatric Surgery provides the most effective long-term solution for weight loss when other methods have failed. Depending on the type of surgery and the amount of weight loss, bariatric surgery has been shown to improve or resolve diabetes in patients; reduce sleep apnea; lower high blood pressure; decrease joint pain; and drop high cholesterol.”
“The health and quality of life benefits these patients receive from bariatric surgery and other weight-loss methods are tremendous. They are more mobile, feel better about themselves, have less depression and have better family, social and work lives,” added Dr Garg.
