Impact of wearing high heels on bone health of women

A survey reveals that regularly wearing high heels may lead to early osteoporosis and the problem of permanent backache.

As per the statistics, over 50 per cent women do not focus on their daily posture which is affecting their bone health adversely.

A study was conducted by Max Healthcare on the topic of ‘Women’s bone health and orthopaedic issues’. It was based on over 500 women in Gurugram, Delhi/NCR aged between 20 to 45 years and above.

As per the survey, it was found that 48.5 per cent women wear high heels on a regular basis or on the weekends for social gatherings. Wearing high heels on regular basis impact the back, toes and the joints of ankle and knee. It puts a lot of pressure on the spine which can hamper the overall bone structure and posture of women over a period of time.

The study also revealed that 37.5 per cent of 20-30 year old women wear high heels daily. According to the data, 43.7 per cent working women wear high heels daily.

Only 14.6 per cent 20-30 year old women do not prefer high heels at all or wear occasionally.

A deformation known as ‘Hallux Valgus’ can take place by wearing heels regularly. In this deformity, the big toe becomes deformed and requires correction surgery. Regular use of high heels might also lead to early osteoporosis and permanent backache.

Therefore, women should wear flats, ballerinas, loafers, slip ons, oxfords etc for daily use and go for heels occasionally only.
