MCM holds lecture on ‘Freezing Molecules in Motion’ and Poster Making Competition on Clean Earth

The Postgraduate Department of Chemistry at Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, under the aegis of the college’s Institution Innovation Council, organised a special lecture titled ‘Freezing molecules in motion by shedding light on them’. Dr. Arijit Kumar De, Associate Professor, Department of Chemical Sciences, IISER, Mohali delivered the lecture. Dr. De started his lecture with the inspirational stories of Dr. C. V. Raman, illustrating the concept of Raman Effect and his contribution to science that made him a Noble laureate in the year 1930. He stressed on the fact that Chemistry is the central Science and a major connector for the various interdisciplinary fields viz., Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry and Nanotechnology. Dr. De’s lecture emphasised the pioneering steps in the field of optical trapping that led to a new branch of Science known as Quantum Biology. He also discussed his ongoing research in the field of Photovoltaic materials (quantum dots, perovskites) and Fluorescent proteins. The lecture was highly appreciated by the participants. The Department also held a Poster Presentation Making Competition on the theme ‘Keen to be clean’ under the aegis of MCM Vigyan Manch. The participants presented posters that highlighted the importance of clean, green earth for the existence of not only human beings but also other living species. Through their posters, the students tried to spread awareness about Biomedical waste, Plastic Waste, Organic Waste, Glass Waste, Paper waste and E-waste and highlighted the importance of waste segregation at the source itself. They also discussed the importance of the 7R viz Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Repair, Re-gift, and Recycle. The winners were awarded cash prizes and certificates.

Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava applauded the efforts of the Department and emphasised on the fact that such efforts bring awareness among students and help them to understand and appreciate the subject in a much better manner. She added that it was really inspiring to see such awareness among the students for litter-free India and their willingness to take responsibility to make a healthier and cleaner India.
