MCM holds session on Sexual Harassment and Law

The Legal Literacy Cell of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh, organised an awareness session on Sexual Harassment and Law with the objective of educating young women about the provisions in the Indian law that protect them against sexual harassment. Dr. Upneet Lalli, Head- Training and Research, Institute of Correctional Administration was the resource person for this enlightening session. Dr. Lalli discussed in detail the Indian law on sexual harrasment including provisions in the Indian Constitution, IPC 1860 and the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013. She further discussed the object of Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013, and the definitions of aggrieved woman, employee, employer, workplace and sexual harrasment as per the law. Enlightening the students about the grievance redressal process, Dr. Lalli motivated the participants to speak up against sexual harrasment as silence is the biggest instigator of such offences to continue. The highly informative event ended with an interactive session wherein the participants’ queries were answered by the expert. The session witnessed enthusiastic participation of over 94 students.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava lauded the Legal Literacy Cell of the college for working towards empowering students with knowledge of various legal provisions in our country. Highlighting the importance of this session, Dr. Bhargava asserted that in order to make workplace safer for women, it is imperative to make women aware about behaviour that constitute sexual harrasment of women and the legal safeguards against such acts.
