Friends collaborate to grow roses in 3 acres of land
Horticulture dept visits the farms

Two friends from village Rureke Kalan have embarked on waves of diversification in agriculture sector by cultivating roses. Rureke Kalan residents Chamkaur Singh and Lakhvir Singh have taken the, initiative to augment their income as well as break the cycle of wheat paddy cultivation.

Chamkaur Singh, who is working as physical education teacher with the education department, said that he was in touch with Institute of Himalayan Biosources Technology (IHBT) Palampur (Himachal) and Aroma Mission where he got the idea to cultivate rose.
After this he started cultivating roses in less than half acre area and extended to one acre and now added 2 acres more. He had procured the roses from Palampur.
He added that the cost of fending the farms, labor etc turns out to be almost 5 lakhs per acre. Due to increase in temperature or extreme cold conditions like frost, the roses wilt and the same are replaced with buds. Although, there are so many challenges in cultivation of roses, they are still trying to make the project successful.
Lakhvir Singh (Ex-Servicemen) added that the land that was cultivated three years ago has started yielding crop now. They are now working on marketing of rose water by tying up with various companies.
Deputy Director Horticulture Barnala Mr. Malkit Singh and Horticulture Officer Narpinder Kaur visited the rose farm and gave information about the various schemes of the department. They added that rose cultivation is being done for the first time in district Barnala.Deputy Commissioner Mrs. Punamdeep Kaur appreciated the efforts of Chamkaur Singh and Lakhbir Singh. She said that with this the young farmers will get more inclined towards diversification.
