Mrs Harsimrat Kaur Badal was talking to newsmen after paying rich tributes to Guru Tegh Bahadur in the Lok Sabha during the course of which she said the ultimate sacrifice made by Guru Sahab to protect the religious freedom of another community did not have any parallel in history. Mrs Badal said observing his martyrdom day as Religious Freedom and Tolerance Day would promote inter-faith understanding across the world.

Mrs Badal also requested the central government to approach governments across the globe, especially where Punjabis resided in significant numbers, to include a chapter in school books on the sacrifice made by Guru Tegh Bahadur for religious freedom and tolerance as well as human dignity. She said credible steps should also be taken in the country to spread Guru ji’s message of religious tolerance by including it in the school and college curriculum. Mrs Badal also called for establishment of a University in the Guru’s name.

The Bathinda mp also called for institution of a national award to commemorate those who had contributed towards the cause of inter-faith understanding. She said the first award should be conferred posthumously upon Bhagat Puran Singh, a Brahmin who espoused the Guru’s faith to serve the suffering humanity.
